Space & Selection of containers:
Start Small !
Remember this: It’s better to be proud of a small garden than to be frustrated by a big one!
Keep in mind when figuring out what to plant in a garden with vegetables that you don’t need a large space to begin. If you choose to grow in containers, you don’t even need a yard. A deck or balcony may provide plenty of space.
While selecting the containers, there are a few options available. One can select different pots for different vegetables or large sized rectangular containers (above 30 inch) to grow them together.
8 to 10 small pots of the size of 6 to 12 inches or 2 to 3 large containers would be more than enough.
For small spaces, we have a very good option of tower planters or pot stands with hanging baskets. These allow us to grow vegetables one above the other.
As a general rule, select as large a container as possible. Small containers dry out more quickly and need daily watering.
If you don’t have a spot in full sun to plant a garden with vegetables, you can still grow many leafy vegetables such as lettuce and spinach. And if you’re in a hot-summer climate, cool-season varieties such as peas may do better in part shade.
There are various vegetables, which can be grown indoor with partial shade. Get more information of such vegetables here: Want to start gardening but No Sun ? Try these easy vegetables.
Most vegetables need 4 to 6 hours of sunlight which can easily be provided by keeping them near a window or balcony or on the terrace.

As with any kind of garden, success usually starts with the soil. Most vegetables do best in moist, well-drained soil that’s rich in organic matter (such as compost or peat moss).
If you don’t have a good soil for vegetables, you can also buy ready to use nutrient rich soil.
In general use a soil-based compost placed over a generous layer of drainage material such as earthenware crocks, pebbles or gravel. Water and feed regularly, especially while plants are bearing flowers and fruit, when a high-potash fertilizer is recommended.
What to grow ?
Virtually any type of vegetable or herb should fair well in a container as long as it has enough room.
